The LOVE Diet

So much dieting advice these days! We are constantly bombarded with the latest concepts for healthy eating. In spite of the overwhelming pool of information available today, I cannot help but wonder if we are still missing an enormous dimension in our role as consumers in the eating process.

Marie Barone’s character on “Everybody Loves Raymond”, was insightful in reminding us of the key ingredient in her delectable dishes: LOVE. But we can take it a step further and ask ourselves what role we have to play as guests for dinner at Marie’s kitchen table? What role can our mind and heartset play as consumers at the evening meal, in the lunchroom, at the snack machine or over the quick cups of tea/coffee that we manage to squeeze into our fast paced lives?

An Elementary Montessori lesson that is shared with the children around the age of 6-7 titled “Where Does Bread Come From?” springs to mind. The lesson raises an awareness and an appreciation for each contributor to the bread making process. The children are presented with a fresh loaf of bread to share and with very little prompting from the educator, list with great zeal the role of nature in providing the soil, sun and water, the farmer for preparing the soil, planting, tending and harvesting, the truck driver for transporting the wheat to the miller and the miller for preparing the flour and so on to the baker’s contribution etc. It is not long before a spontaneous fount of LOVE begins to flow from the children's hearts for the bread they are consuming. Suddenly, a seemingly ordinary loaf of bread has been transformed into a little miracle right before their very eyes.

And what is the inspiration for this transformation? It is simply a shift in awareness that elevates the act of consumption to an act of LOVE.

Today, as we strive in our culture to live consciously, perhaps we can take note from the Montessori children and add a new dimension to our efforts by practicing the art of eating consciously. Like Marie, we can prepare food with LOVE but when we consume, we can apply LOVE there also!

I am neither a scientist, nor a doctor giving medical advice but I am a LIGHTWORKER who understands, from my humble human perspective, the power of LOVE and its miraculous effects. When we realize that the food we eat is infused with the effects of our attitude, we begin to see a great potential for raising our vibration. Ponder this for a moment – what if we made meal time, a sacred time – as opposed to a quick ‘must do’ throughout our day? Even taking five minutes to have a cup of tea with a loved one – it is not just a cup of hot water and a soggy bag – it has potential to sing with the highest vibration of LOVE that flows between you – Be conscious of this potentiality and drink it into your cells – let it raise you up and carry you through the rest of your day!

And what might be the potential effects of loving your food and drink as you consume? My experience has been that when an abundance of LOVE and appreciation flow while I eat, I eat at a slower pace and I eat less. I also find that I am drawn to eating healthier foods but if I do have a craving for something of less nutritional value – there again, with LOVE applied – I eat a much smaller amount and am satisfied. I have become an empowered consumer – empowered with LOVE as opposed to the food having power over me. I have also found that applying LOVE when I eat fosters a self love – a love of my body – that which is the temple of my being.

Food for me has become an opportunity to offer my body not just physical nourishment but a special occasion to infuse my cells and every atom of my being with LOVE. When I eat, I actually allow myself to wonder where the bread comes from and the floodgates of my heart spring open – and the Earth, the Farmer, the Miller, the Truck Driver and the Baker and my body are all the more blessed from the fount of my appreciation.

Infinite Blessings,

Shelley Richardson
